A hang hole turns a flexible pouch into a peg-displayed retail package, but the choice is not purely visual. Hole shape, position, header strength, pouch weight, product distribution, zipper clearance, and retailer hardware determine whether the pack hangs straight or tears in transit. A hole that looks correct on a flat dieline can deform after filling or sit too close to a seal for reliable load support.
Round holes and Euro slots are the two common options. Round holes use a simple circular cut for a single peg or hook. Euro slots use a wider horizontal opening with a shaped central area, allowing more lateral adjustment on display hardware. Neither is universally better; the correct design matches the store fixture and the mechanical load.
Start With the Retail Display System
Ask the retailer or distributor for the peg type, diameter, spacing, usable length, label holder, shelf clearance, and planogram. A generic request for “a hang hole” can lead to a pouch that fits one hook but not another. Store fixtures vary across markets, chains, and categories.
Determine how many pouches will share one peg and whether consumers will slide packages forward. A narrow opening can bind on a thick or angled hook. A very wide slot can allow excessive movement, tilted presentation, or packages overlapping. Test with the actual fixture rather than a desktop rod.
Display method also affects artwork. The header may be partly hidden by a label strip, hook, or package in front. Important branding and required copy should remain visible in the filled hanging position. The general benefits of hang hole packaging are best realized when structural and merchandising decisions are made together.
Round Hang Holes
A round hole is compact and straightforward to die-cut. It can work well on single hooks, narrow pouch headers, and lighter products. Because the cut removes a relatively small area, it may leave more material around the hole than a wide slot in the same header.
Round holes tend to center the pouch at one point. That is useful when the product is balanced and the artwork should face forward. If the product settles unevenly or the hole is slightly off center, however, the pouch may rotate or lean. A wide or irregular pack can look less stable on the peg.
Hole diameter must allow easy loading and removal without excessive free play. The design should include a minimum ligament—the material between the hole and the pouch edge, top seal, zipper, or perforation. Sharp loads are concentrated around the top of the circle, so heavy pouches need sufficient film toughness and reinforcement.
Round holes are often suitable for small vitamin pouches, sample packs, hardware sachets, and lightweight snacks. Final suitability depends on filled weight and distribution, not category name.
Euro Slots
A Euro slot is an elongated die-cut designed for retail peg hooks. Its wider horizontal shape gives merchandisers more freedom to place and straighten the pouch. It can accommodate some variation in hook style and can help wider packages hang with a balanced visual position.
The slot removes more material than a small round hole and creates ends where stress can concentrate. Smooth radii and clean cutting are important. Any sharp corner, nick, or poorly removed slug can start a tear. The header must be tall and strong enough to surround the complete slot while maintaining clearance from seals and features.
Euro slots often suit wider retail pouches and branded displays where alignment matters. For custom candy bags, the slot can support colorful peg merchandising across multiple flavors and sizes. The pouch still needs testing at the maximum fill weight, especially when dense confectionery settles at the bottom and produces a long lever arm.
A Euro slot should not be enlarged casually to fit every possible hook. More width reduces the load-bearing cross-section and may allow the package to shift. Select a fixture-compatible standard and validate it with retailer samples.
Header Height and Feature Clearance
The hang hole usually sits in the sealed header above the product cavity. This area may also contain a zipper, tear notch, laser score, top seal, tamper strip, and artwork. Fitting all functions into a shallow header creates conflicts.
Keep the hole away from the inner edge of the top seal and from any notch or perforation. A tear feature and a hang hole both concentrate stress; placing them close together can create a premature tear path. The remaining film must carry the full pouch weight during transport and display.
If a zipper is present, leave enough distance so the punch does not cut its flange or distort the profile. The consumer also needs a grip area to tear the header away. For stand-up pouches, increasing header height may change overall dimensions, material use, carton fit, and the visual balance of the front panel.
Artwork should include a hole-clearance zone larger than the cut itself. Normal punching and print-registration tolerances can shift their relationship. Avoid small text, thin borders, faces, barcodes, and QR codes near the cut. Background color can continue through the zone if the appearance remains acceptable after material is removed.
Material and Laminate Strength
Hang strength comes from the full laminate. Polyester, oriented polypropylene, nylon, paper, polyethylene, adhesives, and coatings respond differently to sustained load and notch stress. A stiff laminate may hold its shape but crack at a damaged edge. A tough film may stretch, causing the hole to elongate and the pouch to sag.
Paper-based structures need special attention because fiber direction, humidity, and die quality affect tear resistance. A printed paper layer may split from the film if lamination is weak. Clear and metallized films can show whitening or stress marks around the hole, even when they remain functional.
Increasing total thickness may improve strength, but reinforcement should be targeted. A larger sealed header, tougher outer layer, local patch, doubled film area, or redesigned hole position may be more efficient. Any reinforcement must remain compatible with cutting, sealing, recycling claims, and filling equipment.
Punching Quality
Hang holes are usually die-cut during pouch making. The tool should produce smooth edges and remove the slug completely. Dull tooling can leave whiskers, partial cuts, or tiny notches that become crack starters. Loose slugs are also a contamination and appearance concern.
Inspect hole dimensions, position, edge quality, and slug removal across the production run. Punching through multiple layers or seal transitions can change cut quality. Tool wear may appear gradually, so first-off approval alone is insufficient.
Position tolerance should be defined from stable pouch edges. A hole centered to artwork may not be centered to the finished pouch if print and cutting move independently. The functional dimension is its location on the physical pack.
Filled-Package Testing
Hang the heaviest normal fill on the actual retail hook for longer than the expected display period, including a safety margin. Observe elongation, creep, leaning, seal distortion, and tearing. Test after high-temperature or high-humidity conditioning if the distribution environment can soften film or paper.
Simulate transport. Pouches may travel flat in cartons, on display-ready cards, or already loaded onto hooks. Vibration and drops can cause products to hammer against the bottom while the header is constrained. A static hanging test alone cannot represent these dynamic forces.
Check consumer removal. The pouch should slide past the hook end without excessive effort or tearing, even when other packages remain behind it. Confirm that the hole does not create a sharp edge and that the header can still be opened as intended.
Choosing Between the Two
Choose a round hole when the fixture is known, the pouch is relatively narrow or light, and compact reinforcement is valuable. Consider a Euro slot when wider lateral adjustment, common retail peg compatibility, or display alignment is important. If retailers use several fixture systems, collect their requirements before freezing the dieline.
Do not let shape substitute for testing. A small Euro slot in a strong header may outperform a large round hole with poor edge clearance, and the reverse can also be true. Filled weight, center of gravity, structure, cut quality, and fixture geometry determine the real result.
Hang-Hole Design Checklist
- Obtain the retailer’s hook dimensions, spacing, planogram, and display-life requirement.
- Select round hole or Euro slot based on fixture fit and pouch balance.
- Define minimum material around the cut and keep it clear of seals, zippers, and notches.
- Mark a generous artwork safe zone around the punching tolerance.
- Specify hole dimensions, radii, position, edge quality, and complete slug removal.
- Test the maximum fill on actual fixtures after environmental conditioning.
- Include vibration, drop, creep, consumer removal, and long-term hanging checks.
- Revalidate when pouch size, weight, laminate, feature position, or retailer hardware changes.
A hang hole is a load-bearing package feature. Round holes provide a compact centered connection, while Euro slots offer broader merchandising flexibility. When the display hardware, header geometry, material strength, and filled-package tests are aligned, either format can deliver reliable and orderly retail presentation.
